New Addition to our Honduras Family

Here is a letter from Stacia Bergeron (pictured above with our new child, Lorena), our missionary at the IMI orphanage in Comayagua, Honduras.

Hey Everyody!

I want to introduce you all to the newest member of our family and tell you a little bit about her story. Her name is Lorena Michele Maldonado Gonzalez. She is one year old and was in very bad condition when she came to us. Her mother is blind and living in a very poor area here in Comayagua. She is a member of the church Delcy pastors and directs. About three weeks ago, Lorena’s mother brought her up to the front after one of the Sunday services asking for prayer for her because she was very sick. On seeing her Delcy knew instantly that the baby was is very grave condition. Her mother decided she wanted Delcy so that we could take care of her. We immediately brought her to a private hospital here in Comayagua and after five days of being in intensive care there they sent her by ambulance to a public hospital in Tegucigalpa (the capital of Honduras) about 2 hours away because she needed plasma transfusions daily and they said would be easier to get the plasma there.

When I first saw her, I was shocked to find that this little delicate one year old only weighs 8 pounds at one year old. Most babies her age as starting to walk at her age and here she is like a rag doll when you pick her up because she has absolutely no strength. She has respiratory problems, anemia and we are not quite sure what else but needless to say she is one sick little baby girl. I firmly believe that if she hadn’t come to be with us and put into the hospital as soon as we did she wouldn’t be alive today. I honestly don’t know how she has lived as long as she as in her condition. I firmly believe that God has a big plan for this little girl and so He is the one who has kept her alive. We are taking turns taking care of her and switching off at the hospital every 3-4 days because it is a long way for us to drive. I spent four days with her last week and am headed there to take another shift tomorrow. I have to stay that this little girl has won a special place in my heart and if it was possible I would take her as my own.

One of the things that is the hardest down here is there are many more like her. The need is so great that we can’t meet it all. Lorena has four more older brothers and sisters, who when the administrator mamí Reina, went to their small one room house found them all sleeping on the floor from lack of energy and saw that there was nothing in the kitchen as far as food.

As I was holding this frail delicate little flower, while I was taking care of her in the hospital, I broke down crying thinking about all the other children that are out there with similar stories. Who cares what happens to them? Do they have any hope of a brighter future?  Please be praying that more money would come in so we can help more children. Unfortunately a lot of times it comes down to money whether or not we can help with situations like this one. For us to be able to take her in and care for this little girl was the difference of life or death.

I want to give you another example of the desperation that is everywhere in this country. While I was in the hospital the other mothers who were taking care of there asked me for diapers and clothes for them and for their babies. Imagine what type of situation they must be in to be asking me that. But an encouraging thing that I thought about afterwards is that this shows also that they know that Americans give and or try to help. Honestly we are just about the only country that does give and care about other countries. Did you know that almost every private orphanage that is not government run receives almost no funding from the government or from its fellow countrymen but rather almost always it is supported almost entirely by Americans. We have a huge responsibility with the wealth and prosperity God has given us. I know things are very hard economically for people to be able to give but if we don’t continue giving then places like this will cease to exist.

Thanks for all your support and prayers because without you guys I couldn’t be here. I hope that you are doing well. If any of you have a facebook account and we are not friends already please look me up as I try to add updates and pictures as often as possible there. Please continue to keep us in your prayers. Please know that your prayers are what change things and we covet them. “Now do not be anxious for anything but in everything with prayer and supplication let your requests be known to God…”

Philippians 4:6

Singles Retreat News

2

The IMI Singles Retreat was a great success!  We had thirty-two singles from different states.  The purpose of the Singles Retreat was to give guidelines about dating, discuss mistakes we make in the beginning of a relationship, compatibility, facing singleness after divorce, being content in a relationship,  being single and much more. We had a very active group this year!

I want to thank Becky Thompson who was a key player of this event coordinating and making sure that all the details were covered. I also want to thank the rest of the serving team that did an outstanding job- Diane Hicks, Sheila and Diane. Our singles were concerned about going back home with a little bit of extra weight because the food was so good! In addition, I want to thanks Curt Lubben, the fix-it man who put the sound system together. Finally, I want to thank all the Singles for coming, helping out, and participating!

We got such good feedback from the singles that we decided to plan one again. Many singles don’t realize how much there is to learn about dating. Learning how to avoid bad relationships can save a lot of pain in the future. It can even prevent a bad marriage that would later end in divorce. We need to learn to catch the common mistakes and find out what we want before getting into a serious relationship. I was single for a long time before I found my husband. I have a passion for single people and encouraging them into healthy relationships.

Bekha:
This was a great conference! I learned so much. Both Wendy and I both wished that we would have had this information when we First started dating! It would have saved us both much heartache.
Thank you both so much for giving me the tools I needed to move forward and leave my fears behind. This type of teaching is SO needed, and you have made it so understandable and easy. All mothers should have this information to pass on to their daughters before they start seriously dating. I just wanted to let you know that your hard work and efforts are much appreciated! I have already shared much of this information with friends.........Please feel free to share this testimony with whoever you would like. Bekah

Greg: The Singles Retreat was excellent to help us think more about relationships instead of just going by feelings and get into problems later.
